The Role of Mossad in Counter International Terrorism
Mossad, short for HaMossad lemodiʿtafkidim Meyuḥidim, is an agency of Israel located within the Intelligence Ministry. It is among the top agencies in the Israeli Intelligence Service, alongside Aman and Shin Bet. As one of the major branches of the Israeli Intelligence, it shares much responsibility with other branches such as the Mossad and the Intelligence wing of the Foreign Ministry. Like all other branches of the Israeli Intelligence, it also has a number of high officials.
The Mossad is largely responsible for maintaining the relationship between the United States and Israel. In turn, the United States is quite closely allied with Israel and keeps liaison exchanges through Mossad with the Israelis. Under the leadership of David H. Gunner, the head of Mossad, these exchanges happen regularly. In fact, in most cases, consultations take place on a daily basis.
To function properly, Mossad needs to have a number of officials in foreign locations. The main officials are in Washington D.C. and New York. These officials regularly meet with their respective counterparts in the foreign ministries of various countries. In some cases, a Mossad representative may travel to the country of that it serves as an agent for the Mossad.
The Mossad was created in wartime to combat the threat posed by international terrorism. Some of its early operations included efforts to sabotage the German shipyards. In addition to this sabotage activity, the Mossad also took part in supporting the resistance movement against the Nazis. Many of its operations during the war were considered acts of sabotage.
Today, Mossad continues to conduct operations across the globe. A number of its current missions include trying to foil terrorist organizations, such as the IRA. It also helps to prevent acts of terrorism in general. It also conducts a number of spying operations in order to gather information on the intentions of hostile groups and their leaders. It even occasionally sabotages enemy operations in order to protect American interests.
Mossad has two branches. The first is its internal operations wing, which is headed by Menachem Begin, the former Prime Minister of Israel. The second is its external operations wing, which is responsible for its assistance to various countries in its struggle against international terrorism. Both wings of Mossad operate in different parts of the world. Their activities are frequently combined in order to best accomplish Mossad’s mission.
